Well, it’s been a month and a half since my last posting, and for that I apologize. But I really do have a good excuse— I’m a Dr. now!! =D

That’s right, yours truly successfully defended his thesis two and a half weeks ago! It was a pretty stressful event. My external examiner was one of the leading experts in cochlear modelling, Professor Chris Shera from Harvard-MIT. I have a great deal of respect for Professor Shera, so I wanted to be on top of things for my viva. There were some tough questions, and of course I stuck my foot in my mouth a couple times, but overall it was a very stimulating and thought-provoking experience.

Back at the photographic ranch, I have a couple sets of shots to share! The first is from the SUHC’s New Forest walk, from the 11th of October, some of which I will discuss here. In the next post, I’ll present some photos from a celebratory trip to visit friends in the Netherlands!

The SUHC’s first walk of the year always originates from Brockenhurst, a small village in the New Forest. It’s close and easily accessible by train from Southampton, which makes it an ideal destination for the club.

The below picture was taken just as we were leaving Brockenhurst, heading up into the forest. The composition suggested to me that a B&W treatment would be appropriate, but is otherwise unaltered.

There are plenty of opportunities to discover interesting shrooms in the New Forest, as my friend Nick Bailey and I discovered last year. As the bright colours of the mushroom below suggest, it is highly poisonous. This example of Amanita muscaria, also known as ‘Fly Agaric’ also apparently possesses a hallucinogenic compound… not that I would know from personal experience ;-)

Though it’s always exciting to meet the newcomers to the club, there will always be a core group of members that vary from year-to-year. The last photo presented from this set shows a few of from this group walking along an old road :-)

Stay tuned for a description of my trip through the land of windmills and clogs!!
