Craig and Laura

Although it’s been more than a month since they came to visit, I thought I’d say a quick few words about my friends Craig and Laura.
I’ve known Craig since middle school. I think we first got to know each other through Mrs. Svingen’s Advanced English class in 7th grade. Throughout school, we always had a mutual respect for each other and considered one another friends, but we didn’t do the same activities and moved in slightly different social circles. It wasn’t until after we graduated PHS that we got to know each other better. Our shared enthusiasm for the great outdoors is one of the reasons we get on so well.
I first met Laura the summer before I left for England. My friend Jacqui and I were on a road trip down to California to go wine tasting, and we made a stop over in Portland to visit Craig and Laura (the lovebirds met while at Lewis and Clark College, in Portland). Though we only interacted with them for a short time, it was plain to see they had a special chemistry. I personally was very happy for Craig, as I think that anyone who knows her would agree that Laura is a wonderfully sweet and thoughtful person.
Though they only stayed for a short weekend (and were valiantly fighting against their jet-lag), we managed to do a number of things: I showed them around the university, took them to Waitrose, and went for a walk in the New Forest!
The picture was taken with my 100mm macro lens, which has proven itself a decent portrait lens in the past. If it has any shortcoming, it is only in the lack of image stabilisation. The optical quality, even wide open, is fantastic.
I like the image for a number of aesthetic reasons as well. The shape of the trees that frame the two echo their own posture, even their arms and hands. But most of all, I love their smiles and I think the picture as a whole expresses their personalities.
Craig and Laura are currently in Italy working on organic farms through the WWOOF program. On their way back to the US, they will be making another stop in the UK! I can’t wait to hear about all their adventures in Italy.
