New (Forest) Shrooms
· Wednesday October 31, 2007

A couple weeks ago marked the first SUHC daywalk of the year. This is traditionally a friendly ramble through the New Forest, and this year proved no different.

As with all clubs and societies, there is always a significant inrush of new members (or ‘freshers’ as they are known here in the UK) at the start of the year. In order to add some variety to our walk, my good friend Nick Bailey and I peeled off the main group after lunch and went shroom (photo) hunting!

The New Forest is renowned for its various mushrooms. I am told that there are even mushroom hunters who come to the forest to harvest them to be sold at a steep price to restaurants in London.

Prickly

We also discovered a number of creatures, in addition to the varied mushrooms in the New Forest.

Hungry

Unfortunately for me, a tick found its way into my arm during the afternoon of exploring the undergrowth. So far I don’t have any signs of Lyme’s Disease, but I’m continuing to keep watch for the next couple weeks…
